The smart home debate

Once construction is complete, elements of artificial intelligence (AI) can become part of a homeowner’s daily life. Smart thermostats learn habits. Lighting systems predict occupancy. Security cameras recognize familiar faces. Voice assistants answer questions and control everything from blinds to music. When it works, it feels almost magical. When it doesn’t, it can feel like negotiating with a particularly stubborn toddler.

What many people are discovering is that every new layer of home automation introduces another possible point of failure. The lighting system depends on Wi-Fi. The security system depends on the cloud. The voice assistant depends on an external server, and on the company behind it still being around, supported and secure. If the internet goes down, a cloud service fails, or a manufacturer stops making a product, parts of the house may fail to function as intended. This reality deserves more attention than it often gets.

Traditional light switches never require software updates. A conventional deadbolt doesn’t need a password reset or a battery change. The more internet-reliant intelligence we add to our homes, the more complexity we introduce alongside it. It is a bit like the difference between a 1980s auto shop class and a modern vehicle. Decades ago, much of a car could be diagnosed and repaired with a standard tool set. Today, even basic maintenance can require specialized diagnostics, resets and software support.

A well-designed smart home should always have manual overrides. Homeowners should be able to operate essential functions without needing an app, an internet connection, or a software engineer on speed dial. Technology should enhance resilience, not replace it.

Privacy, security and data control

Perhaps the most important question surrounding AI isn’t technical at all. It’s human. Many AI-enabled devices collect a great deal of information: Preferences, routines, schedules, occupancy patterns, entertainment habits, energy use and sometimes even conversations. Manufacturers generally say this data improves performance. Critics say it creates unprecedented surveillance inside private homes. Both arguments contain some truth.

Homeowners should understand what information their devices collect, where that information is stored and who has access to it.

Most people, of course, do not spend much time reading the fine print. They tend to click through the authorizations and get to the part that promises convenience. What may concern some homeowners even more than privacy is dependency. Much of the world’s AI capability is controlled by a relatively small number of companies.

As we hand more decisions, data and daily functions over to these systems, we are also placing greater trust in organizations whose primary obligation is to shareholders, not homeowners. Whether that becomes a problem remains to be seen, but it is worth considering. Cybersecurity is no longer just a corporate or government issue. It’s a homeowner issue, too. Family photos, security cameras, smart locks and connected devices can all become targets if they are not properly secured. Convenience and privacy now exist in a delicate balancing act.

What happens to family life?

This may be the least discussed consequence of all. For generations, homes have been places where families interacted directly with one another. Today, many interactions are mediated through screens, devices, notifications and algorithms. A home that automatically manages every task may create efficiency. It may also remove opportunities for communication, cooperation and shared responsibility. If we replace the time saved with doom scrolling alone in a room, did we really gain anything meaningful?

Children who grow up asking voice assistants for answers may develop different habits than those who ask parents, siblings, teachers, or neighbours. That is not necessarily good or bad. It is simply different. The long-term effects are still unknown because the technology is evolving faster than researchers can study it. Claude AI was recently asked, “What has changed in the world for the worst but us humans haven’t realized?” Its response was surprisingly thoughtful: “The collapse of unstructured time,” referring to what smartphones and algorithms have done to boredom.

Boredom has a bad reputation, but boredom at home with the people you love can create space for creativity, introspection and deeper connection. Some of our best ideas arrive when nothing is demanding our attention. Doom scrolling strips some of that away. For all of AI’s extraordinary capabilities, it still cannot replace the value of a family meal, a face-to-face conversation, or a parent teaching a child how to solve a problem independently.

If we replace the time saved from yesterday’s manual chores – laundry, vacuuming, lawn mowing, driveway shovelling – with doom scrolling, we may be losing more than we are gaining. We also lose those first “jobs” many of us had growing up. Entry-level chores are often the first step in learning what it takes to earn a dollar and take pride in a well-kept home. Some parts of home life may not benefit from optimization.

The right tool, not the only tool

I’ve already had clients ask if AI can design their entire renovation. My answer is usually the same: It can help create the picture, but it still doesn’t know where the plumbing stack is, or how to conceal it without an unsightly bulkhead. That’s the point. The truth, as usual, sits somewhere in the messy middle.

AI is a tool. Like any tool, its value depends on how it is used. It can help homeowners explore design ideas, improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption and automate mundane tasks. Those are real benefits. But it should not be relied on for critical decisions without professional oversight. It should not be used to create systems so complicated, nobody knows how to operate the house when the internet fails. And it should not blur the line between convenience and necessity.

Most importantly, technology should serve the family, not the other way around. The homes we build are still about people and shelter, not processors and residual earnings. Artificial intelligence may someday know a great deal about how we live, but it still has a long way to go before it understands what makes a house feel like a home.
