The 2,150 sq. ft. main floor of this home is graced with large windows that look over a landscape surrounded by tall, mature trees and a garden resonating with melodious birdsong – a rare but joyous connection to nature. While large windows frame beautiful views, the interior floorplan didn’t align with them, leaving the family unable to fully enjoy the outdoors from inside. Rooms felt isolated, circulation was unclear and the main floor gave a misleading sense of being smaller than it was.
It starts at the front door
The oversized entrance foyer felt undefined, like stepping into a space behind the scenes and did not project a sense of home or life, with no real connection to the outdoors.
Through a thoughtful redesign – and careful consultation with the family – it was transformed into a welcoming threshold that offers glimpses of the backyard, while maintaining privacy. The awkwardly angled closet facing the entry door was reconfigured into a practical rectangular storage piece decorated with three custom-designed brass bird handles and is now oriented toward the entrance.
With the closet repositioned, the opening to the living room was widened, removing doors and giving it a strong visual connection with the dining room, offering partial views to the backyard. Natural light now travels from one space to another.
Kitchen flow
The kitchen, despite having a generous bay window, was disconnected from the view. A wall blocked the sightline, and the kitchen’s centre of gravity sat off to the side, away from outdoor light. The space, including the breakfast area, was approximately 375 sq. ft., and while the bay window was dedicated to the breakfast area, the cabinetry created a barrier and separated it from the kitchen. The distance between opposing counters in the kitchen was also not practical for everyday movement – especially when carrying hot dishes.
A large island now anchors the space, offering room for gathering, cooking, baking and everyday life. It also provides an immediate landing surface when removing hot items from the microwave or oven, eliminating long and unnecessary travel across the room. The fridge is positioned directly across from the sink, supporting an efficient workflow, and the cooktop is framed with comfortable prep space on both sides. A narrow ledge nearby provides a convenient place for items such as salt, pepper, a clock, or a small potted herb.
A pocket-door cabinet conceals a coffee station – open and welcoming in the morning, calm and closed when entertaining. A dedicated floor-to-ceiling pantry of approximately 57 sq. ft. was created beside the kitchen and provides additional storage while remaining visually quiet.
Entertaining thoughts
The other side of the kitchen shares a wall with the family room, which received a new identity while preserving the existing fireplace as an anchor, and now connects to the kitchen through two direct pathways, one of which leads naturally toward the dining room.
The home’s new floorplan prioritizes accessibility, sightlines and privacy. The main floor finally feels as spacious as it truly is, allowing all the rooms to stay connected to the beautiful outdoor gardens, while letting natural light flow throughout.
