According to seasoned contractor, Paul Moody of Configure Construction Group, it’s often the unexpected things that can lead to problems during a home renovation.

RENO MISTAKE #1: Indecisiveness

You’re working on a kitchen renovation and move the sink because it’s taking up too much counter space. However, after the plumbers leave for the day, you are standing by the window overlooking your backyard and think, “Wow this is a great view. We should’ve moved the sink to this spot.” Great idea! Only now you’ve got to call the plumbers back and have them take out the plumbing they did today to reinstall it by the window. That costs money.

“When you are indecisive about your renovation and have to bring back your trades to revisit work, it results in unnecessary costs,” explains Paul. “Instead, have a clear plan before you begin.” When you have a well-thought-out plan, you avoid costly do-overs. Stick to your budget, and get the results you desire.

RENO MISTAKE #2: Cutting costs with below-average plumbing fixtures

There’s a great scene in the movie Moonstruck where a plumber explains to his client why his work costs so much. “It costs money. It costs money because it saves money.” When it comes to your budget, cheapest is rarely the best choice for plumbing fixtures.

Below-average plumbing fixtures eventually lead to leaks below the surface. Water damage is slow and dangerous, leading to issues like rot and mould. Once detected, the issue can’t be corrected without demolishing drywall or worse, your imported Italian tile. When you choose cheaper fixtures so you can afford that lovely tile, you’re looking at far greater costs down the line. Pay for quality behind the walls and you’ll save yourself money down the road.

RENO MISTAKE #3: Only upgrading the “esthetics”

Because we naturally want to live in beautiful homes, we tend to invest in the things we can see. Lovely kitchen cabinets, marble countertops, high-end steam showers, hardwood floors, and more. However, when renovating and updating, it’s always best to include key items that result in a solid house. This includes things such as insulation, windows, the roof and furnace. These upgrades might not be noticeable when friends drop by, but you’ll notice them with reduced energy bills, ideal temperature levels and improved ROI when it comes time to sell.

Always speak to your contractor before you begin a home renovation project. You’ll reduce the risk for costly mistakes while increasing the value of your home.
