Five tips to make any space shine

Planning a renovation is inspiring, exciting and sometimes even exhausting. So much time and energy go into deciding your finishes, layouts, colours and furnishings that an important design element such as lighting is often forgotten. Yet it’s a powerful tool that transforms how a space is perceived. It also creates or changes a mood, aids in mobility and highlights design features. Good lighting will enhance any space – and great lighting will elevate it.

For the best results, a layered approach is key and offers you the flexibility to establish a different ambience and function within a given space.

There are four basic types of lighting: Ambient, task, accent and decorative.

Ambient lighting illuminates a space, and allows you to move easily throughout a room. Task lighting prvides extra lighting in a specific area devoted to a particular function, such as reading or cooking. Accent lighting is used to highlight or draw attention to artwork, decor or architectural features. And finally, decorative lighting accessorizes a space or is a fixture that draws attention to itself – the finishing touch or focal point in a room.

Another source that should never be forgotten in design is natural light – the most inexpensive and environmentally friendly type available. Many homes have wonderfully large windows that allow for maximum natural light, even in smaller spaces. Not only does this feature provide you with a great way to let the outside brightness filtre inside, it also helps to create the illusion of a larger, elevated space. If you live in a home or a townhome condo, skylights or sun tunnels are dramatic ways to increase natural light.

The right lighting can not only dramatically improve the look and feel of your home, it can also contribute to your mood and productivity. However, if not done right, it can create an uncomfortable and non-functional space. Invest some time and consideration into how best to illuminate the areas in your home. Be creative with your design plan and give proper attention to the four layers of lighting within your space – you may be pleasantly surprised at the end results.

Five valuable lighting tips

1. Visit a reputable store when purchasing your lighting. Staff there are well versed in the product, so spend some time inquiring about the various types available, especially with LED lighting.

2. Incorporate a different style of fixture into your space, something modern in a traditional environment or a beautiful crystal chandelier paired with a rustic farmhouse table.

3. The general rule for an eight-ft. ceiling height is that a chandelier should be hung approximately 29 to 33 in. above a dining table, and for each added foot of ceiling height, increase that by three in.

4. Recessed pot lights are a lovely addition in a room, however, be sure to add the proper amount – too many can be overwhelming and appear messy. For condos, adding pot lights may not be allowed, so consider using track lighting instead. There are many great track systems on the market that have an elevated look and are far more user-friendly for a condo environment.

5. Dimmer switches are a great option to control the ambience of a room. When using LED lights, be sure to used proper dimmer switches to ensure your lights function correctly.
