Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) invites members and industry leaders across North America and the globe to learn, engage, and network at the virtual 2021 IDC Design Symposium – Building Resilience through Empathy on Oct. 13 and 14, 2021.

The two-day event features a program of in-depth education, award presentation, workshop participation, the PROpel Emerging Leaders program, and inspiring keynote presentations. This year, attendees will dive deeper into design thinking to learn about empathy and its role in building resilience, especially in our new post-pandemic world.

The 2021 IDC Design Symposium accounts for two IDCEC approved hours. Participants will receive their certificates of completion via email following the webinar and will need to self-report their hours.

DAY 1: WEDNESDAY, OCT. 13

3:30 – 6:00 p.m. ET – PROpel EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM & MIXER

Zahra Ebrahim will deliver this year’s Propel Emerging Leaders keynote presentation.

Zahra, CEO and Co-Founder of Monumental, will deliver this year’s Propel Emerging Leaders keynote presentation. She is a public interest designer and strategist focused on deep, community-led approaches to policy, infrastructure, and service design. She is an established bridge-builder across grassroots and institutional spaces and is a leading practitioner in reforming institutions to be more human-centred and equitable. Learn more.

7:00 – 8:00 p.m. ET - IDC AWARDS CELEBRATION

Join IDC in celebrating and honouring our members’ achievements at this year’s virtual awards celebration. The event will celebrate winners of the 2021 Value of Design Awards (VODA), recognize participants of the PROpel Emerging Leaders program, winner of the Legacy Award for Distinguished Service, and for the first time, winners of the Innovation in Design Thinking Student Competition! DAY 2: THURSDAY, OCT. 14

12:00 – 1:00 p.m. ET - KEYNOTE SPEAKER: BRUCE MAU

Bruce Mau will deliver this year’s design symposium keynote presentation. Co-founder and CEO of Massive Change Network, Bruce Mau is a brilliantly creative optimist whose love of thorny problems led him to create a methodology for whole-system transformation. Across thirty years of design innovation, he’s collaborated with global brands and companies, leading organizations, heads of state, renowned artists, and fellow optimists. Learn more.

1:30-3:30 p.m. ET - DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP

Academy will be running an interactive workshop focused on Design Thinking, with symposium participants looking at specific empathy artifacts such as empathy maps, service blueprints, and journey maps. Workshop participants will learn various strategies and tactics to implement in their practices in order to better understand their customers’ needs and gain a deeper understanding of the power of user centred design.
