A master bathroom and powder room get the spa treatment with some glamourous touches.

Transforming a builder-basic bathroom into a spa-like retreat is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. For a Brampton couple, a dramatic makeover of the master bath and guest powder room added an elegant touch of luxury to their home.
Deciding upon a white-on-white colour scheme for both bathrooms brought a thorough examination of the various shades of white. We started with lavish vanities from GODI’s Dancing Room collection. They show pale pink and grey veining in the marble top, while the vanity’s white ash wood has a slightly pale yellow tint in the graining. Using this as inspiration, marble tile with little visible veining was introduced into the design equation.
In total, we selected three different marbles. For the powder room, we used Greek Thassos marble on the floor, and in the master bath Greek Naxos marble was used for the floor and walls. Naxos is a calcite-based marble that has a structure of large beautiful crystals that vary from white to light grey. Thassos looks similar to refined sugar and is more consistently white than Naxos. In the master bath, Italian Carrera marble, chosen for its visual interest, was used on the shower floor and as a border.
While an off-white and silver wallpaper adds a level of texture to the powder room, in the master bath, damask-patterned wallpaper with a subtle lustre offers an ornate old-world feeling. Best of all, it is vinyl (but you would be hardpressed to tell!), so steam will not be a problem.
Black and white crystal chandeliers add sparkle and glamour to both bathrooms. Crystal wall sconces rest on each side of the master bath vanity. At the owner’s request, LED lighting was added behind the floating crown moulding. Because the LEDs change colour, they enhance the ambiance of the room.
Although the floors are heated, a custom- printed rug adds warmth in the master bathroom. Use your imagination if you decide on a custom rug—patterns and images are limitless, and custom binding is also available.
For The Holidays
Non-traditional holiday accessories add hints of colour, without being overpowering.
|IN THE MASTER BATH
Birch bark candles, a luxurious rug, white fur throw on the ash wood and ostrich leather bench, a silver vase with fresh dark-red floral arrangement, and moss balls atop the side cabinet.
|IN THE POWDER ROOM
Snow-white floor vases match the violin shapes in the wallpaper, a floral arrangement with white hydrangeas and dark red and pale green cascading flowers underscores the unconventional holiday decor.
